Academic Readiness

Academic Readiness

At Burlington College, there is a language development program available to students that aims to promote and enhance English skills across a range of proficiency levels. New English language learners are assessed using the English Placement Test, which determines their language level and competency needs.
The program offers Academic Readiness courses that are categorized by competency focus and level of achievement. If a student doesn’t meet the English language proficiency level required for grade 10, they are placed in Academic Readiness Courses. The courses focus on developing reading, vocabulary, and writing skills, while also incorporating grammar skills across all courses.
The Academic Readiness courses are intended to help newly arrived students to develop competency skills that will assist them in understanding college courses in mathematics, sciences, and social studies. Students may be placed in one or more levels of study, and those who progress quickly can move to a higher level as soon as their progress is evident, without waiting until the end of a semester.
The flexibility of the Academic Readiness program aligns with the college’s value of teaching individual students in a class, rather than just teaching a class as a whole.
